Mounted Sheriff's Posse
The Waseca County Mounted Sheriff's Posse is a volunteer organization that was founded in 1969 by Sheriff Donald D. Eustice who sought volunteers that were interested in serving the Sheriff's office and had a horse. The Mounted Sheriff’s Posse members volunteer their time for various events throughout the year including, scene and perimeter security, disaster response, search and rescue missions, county fair, and traffic patrols, and much more. In 2013, the Mounted Sheriff's Posse members modified the requirement of having a horse to requiring members to own a Posse-suitable horse or ATV that would be ready for duty at any time.
Sheriff's Posse Applicants may be anyone over the age of 18 with a good background, driving record, and civic involvement. Applicant must live within Waseca County or a county bordering Waseca County.
The Mounted Sheriff's Posse is an integral part of search and rescue calls. They also assist with crowd control, security and public relations. Mounted Sheriff's Posse members participate in public service activities such as parades throughout Waseca County and the Waseca County Fair. The Mounted Sheriff's Posse will also assist nearby counties if aid is needed. Riding members provide their horses, trailers, and tow vehicles at their own expense. Each rider and horse must be tested annually on their horsemanship skills and their ability to meet the required standards.
Auxiliary members are family members of a Sheriff's Posse member, over the age of 18 who provide support and assistance to the Mounted Sheriff's Posse.
In 2024, the Waseca County Junior Posse was introduced as an additional branch of the Waseca County Sheriff’s Posse. Junior Posse Members are between the ages of 16-18 and have the same requirements as a Posse Member, except they will not work any events where a uniformed member is required. Junior Posse members will train alongside Posse Members, learning about the Posse, the Sheriff’s Office, and much more while training to advance into the Waseca County Sheriff’s Posse Service at the age of 18. A Posse-suitable horse or ATV is required of a Junior Posse Member.
The Mounted Sheriff's Posse is funded by tax-deductible donations and fundraising events put on by the members. Donations provide funds for equipment, tack, and training expenses.
The Benefits of Horses
Horses can easily navigate tough terrain that would be difficult to cross by vehicle or on foot. This makes the mounted posse a huge benefit during search and rescue operations. Horses, by their size alone, provide a formidable presence of the law without any open show of force; horses are also huge crowd pleasers and attract the positive attention of both children and adults.
